4th Pujada Del “Pavo” – “Col De Rates” Parcent
December 20th, 20094th Annual Turkey Race in Parcent, Spain.
With temperatures down to single figures and ice on the ground up the mountain it was a cold ride, although nothing compared to coming down the mountain after the finish, damn that was cold.
I managed a respectable 34th, 14th in class for over 30’s, with approximately 50 riders starting only 38 managed it all the way up the hill to the finish. Pete managed a rather respectable 19th placing him second in class for over 50’s beaten only by his own cycling buddy.
Having never raced before and only cycling since the summer, I don’t think it went too badly, the route wasn’t at all what I expected, but then again I’d only seen a route map showing the gradients.
Three laps of the local township then straight up a whopping great mountain, all-in-all only 43Km, but my legs were screaming.
I managed to lose my chain after lap one meaning I had to stop to put it back on, then sprint back to the main group, just managing to catch them before they went into lap two, but then every hill saw me being dropped off the back, only to return on the descents. After almost losing the chain again I didn’t manage to make it back to the main group before the climb, although I could see them, there was no chance of ever catching them.
Unfortunately no times were taken so I have no idea of how long there was between me and Pete, and the rest of the riders, which would have been nice, but hey ho.
