What have I done?

Wednesday, May 24th, 2006

Well it seems I have convinced myself to join a gym, I’ve thought about it for ages, years infact, but that’s where it usually ended, with the thinking about it.

Looking specifically at running, I bought myself a pair of proper running shoes, Saucony Grid 3D Hurricane 7 from Sports Shoes Unlimited.

Since I have the trainers, I felt I should really motivate myself to run, I knew I wouldn’t really be going out running round the block, unless it wasn’t my block, and it was a nice day, so I took a trip to see Katie’s gym.

I wasn’t there to prove a point, I wasn’t there to compete with anyone, I wasn’t even there to join, what I did do was go for a run on one of the many treadmills. Bearing in mind that I havn’t exercised since school, some 10/11 years ago, and I smoked a fair bit until about 4 years ago, I don’t think I faired too badly.

4 kilometers in 30 minutes, ranging from walking at 5.5kph to jogging at 13.5kph, using the random function of the tredmill to throw a few slight incline in there for variety.

Max heart rate 197 bpm
Min heart rate 130 bpm

I tried to play around with my heart rate a little, but not being at all fit, I struggled. I ultimately wanted to see how long it took to raise and lower my heart rate, I found that from running 13.5 kph I could raise it rather quickly to 197 bpm, then backing off to walking pace at 5.5 kph I found that a minute later it was 150 bpm, and another minute later still it was 146 bpm.

I know I’m unfit, but I don’t know to what level of un-fitness I am, how long should it take for your heart rate to drop by 50 bpm?

Anyhow, I’ll have something to blog about, whether it’s how I progress, or how long it takes to completely give in, I don’t know.

Where have you been?
